I wrote this for my friends from high school who love trolling me on social media. Sure, I’d much rather pay less taxes and not send money to foreign countries, but there are benefits to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia. I am tired of the whataboutism in regards to Ukraine funding whenever I critique the Trump administration’s actions. So in the future when I critique Trump doing a Tesla car commercial and then accepting $100 million from Elon Musk and someone comes back with “100 million not shit compared to the billions sent to ur boy in Ukraine but it’s ok they are not selling weapons to the cartels” I will drop this link and move on.
That being said. Here is why supporting the Ukraine is good for all Americans:
Defending Democracy Against Authoritarianism
The U.S. has long positioned itself as a defender of democracy whether you like it or not! If Russia is allowed to conquer Ukraine, it emboldens authoritarian regimes worldwide. This could lead to more global instability, which ultimately affects American interests and values.
If Russia succeeds in taking Ukraine by force, it sets a dangerous precedent that other authoritarian regimes (like China with Taiwan) might follow. By helping Ukraine resist, the U.S. reinforces the principle that borders cannot be changed through aggression, which helps maintain global stability and reduces the likelihood of future conflicts that could drag the U.S. into war.
Protecting Economic Stability
Look into how life looked around WWII for people in the United States. Not fun. A prolonged or expanded war in Europe could severely disrupt global markets, leading to rising energy prices, supply chain issues, and economic instability. Supporting Ukraine helps prevent the war from spreading to NATO countries, which would have much more severe economic consequences for the U.S.
I would like to pass on that and am down to pay $300 a year in taxes to do so.
That payment will vary baed upon income level.
To estimate how much of an individual’s income goes toward this aid:
Average Federal Tax Rate: The average federal tax rate varies, but for this estimation, let’s use 14%.
Calculation: Multiply the average tax rate by the percentage of the budget allocated to Ukraine:
14%×1.77%=0.248%14\% \times 1.77\% = 0.248\%14%×1.77%=0.248%
14%×1.77%=0.248%
Therefore, approximately 0.248% of an average American taxpayer’s annual income is directed toward U.S. assistance to Ukraine.
Example: For an individual earning $50,000 annually:
-
Federal Taxes Paid: $50,000 \times 14% = $7,000
-
Contribution to Ukraine Aid: $7,000 \times 1.77% ≈ $124
Thus, this taxpayer would contribute approximately $124 of their annual income to U.S. assistance for Ukraine.
That does not seem like a lot of money per year to keep the world out of WWIII and having to send our troops to the Ukraine to fight. The benefit to supporting the Ukraine is worth much more.
